Translation by Dr. Sant Singh Khalsa
Without inner balance, everyone is blind. Clinging to Maya, the world's glitter, is total darkness.
In that easy balance, we come to understand the True, Endless Word.
Forgiving us, the Perfect Guru joins us with the Creator.
This one says that without inner calm we can't see what is real, and the Guru's forgiveness brings us to the Creator.
Bin sahjai sabh anDh hai — without sahj, everyone is blind. Sahj means a natural, easy balance inside. Maa-i-aa moh gubaar — clinging to Maya, the world's glitter, is thick darkness. The two pictures meet. Without balance, you are walking in the dark. This isn't about being a bad person. It's about not being able to see.
An earlier verse in this raag said the blind find no place to rest. Here it reaches everyone. Nobody is left out. Clever minds, big learning, holy titles: none of these switch on the light.
Sehjay hee sojhee pa-ee — in that calm, understanding comes. We come to see the True, endless Word. It isn't new facts. It's truly seeing what the Word is, what it means and what it does. The Word was always there. Think of a dark room with a lamp on the table the whole time. Calm is when the lamp comes on.
Aapay bakhas milaa-i-an pooray gur kartaar — forgiving us, the Perfect Guru joins us with the Creator. The Guru forgives and brings us together. The Guru carries us across the scary ocean an earlier verse described. And we meet not a far-away idea, but the Maker, the One who does.
What is something you had heard many times but only genuinely understood at a particular moment — and what changed in that moment of real comprehension?
