Translation by Dr. Sant Singh Khalsa
Our Lord and Master is the Power of the powerless.
He does not come or go — He is Eternal and Permanent.
Through the Word of the Guru's Shabad, He is known as True.
This one says the One is the strength of people who feel they have no strength.
This is the rahaa-o, the "pause" line, the center of the shabad. Saahib nitaani-aa kaa taan: "the Master is the power of the powerless." The One is not only for the strong, or only for when things go well. The One is the safe place for people who have no other safe place. That is why the song starts with the hardest times. That is where this is easiest to see.
Aa-ay na jaa-ee thir sadaa: "He does not come or go; He stays forever." People come and go. Friends who turned away came and went. The One does not show up only in bad times and leave in good times. The One is always here, standing firm.
Think of the lighthouse on the shore. Boats come and go, storms come and go, but the light stays in its place.
Gur sabdee sach jaan: through the Guru's Word, He is known as True. Not by argument, and not by clever ideas. When the Guru's Word truly reaches you, it shows you the One who has been standing there all along.
What does it mean to have someone who never leaves — not as a thought but as an actual experience? Have you ever felt that kind of permanent presence?
