The Lord Showers His Mercy and We Find the Saadh Sangat
Translation by Dr. Sant Singh Khalsa
The Supreme Lord showers His Mercy, and we find the Saadh Sangat — the Company of the Holy.
The more time we spend there, the more we come to love the Lord.
The Lord is the Master of both worlds. There is no other place of rest.
When the True Guru is pleased and satisfied, O Nanak — the True Name is obtained.
This one says that the One's kindness leads us to good company, and good company grows our love.
After eight verses of hard times and good times, here is the answer. It is not a plan to fix yourself. It is a chain of gifts, one leading to the next. The One shows kindness. We find good company. The more time we spend there, the more we love. The True Guru is pleased. And we receive the True Name.
Kirpaa karay jis paarbarahm hovai saaDhoo sang: when the One shows mercy, we find the saaDhoo sang, the company of good and holy people. The chain starts with the One. We do not find the good company first. The One's kindness leads us to it. Grace comes first.
Ji-o ji-o oh vaDhaa-ee-ai ti-o ti-o har si-o rang: "the more we spend time there, the more we love the Lord." Good company is a place where love grows on its own. It grows not only through lessons but through the people around you. We become like those we spend time with. Think of a friend who loves reading. Spend time with them, and soon you are reading too.
Satgur tuthai paa-i-aa naanak sachaa naa-o: when the True Guru is pleased, O Nanak, the True Name is received. This ties the whole song together. The door opens because the Guru is pleased, not because we achieved something. And good company is where the Guru is pleased.
Who are the people in your life in whose company you feel most drawn toward what is good, genuine, and true? How much time do you spend with them?
