Translation by Dr. Sant Singh Khalsa
Of all these — not one admits to any deficiency. All say that they have found the Lord.
But he alone is a true devotee — whom the Lord Himself has united with Himself.
Here is the surprise: every one of these people says they have made it. But the true devotee is the one the Lord Himself brings close.
Ghaat na kin hee kahaa-i-aa: not one of them admits anything is missing. Sabh kahtay hai paa-i-aa: they all say, "We have found Him."
Guru Arjan does not try to judge which path is right and which is wrong. He notices something honest: sincere people on every path believe they have arrived.
Then he makes a different move. Jis maylay so bhagtaa: the bhagat, the true devotee, is the one whom the Lord unites with Himself.
The key is who does the uniting. It is not the person who perfects a method. It is the Lord, who reaches in by His own choice. Think of being picked for a team. You can practice hard, and you should. But the invitation comes from the coach.
So the question "Which path is correct?" matters less than "Has the Lord drawn this person close?" And no method can promise that from our side.
What is the difference between believing you have found God and actually being united with God? Can you tell the difference from the inside?
