Translation by Dr. Sant Singh Khalsa
I have obtained the comfort of comforts.
The Guru has implanted the Word of the Shabad deep within me.
The True Guru has shown me my Husband Lord — and has placed His Hand upon my forehead.
Sukh-u paa-i-aa sukh-daataa mili-aa — I have obtained comfort (sukh-u paa-i-aa); I have met the Giver of Comfort (sukh-daataa mili-aa). The doubled comfort: the sukh obtained, and the meeting with the One who gives sukh. Not just a feeling of ease but the source of ease encountered.
Antar sabad-u samaa-i-aa guroo kai — within me, the Guru's Shabad (guroo kai — the Guru's) is permeating (samaa-i-aa — absorbed into, dwelling fully within). The Shabad not held at arm's length as a teaching to consider, not stored as a doctrine to remember — samaa-i-aa, absorbed within. The Shabad permeating the interior the way water permeates soil.
Satgur pirh-u dikhaai-aa, sir-i hath-u dhar-i-aa — the True Guru has shown me my Husband Lord (pirh-u dikhaai-aa — shown me the beloved, revealed the husband to me); He has placed His Hand (hath-u dhar-i-aa) upon my head (sir-i). The dual gestures: the Guru shows the divine; and then places His Hand on the head in blessing. The hand on the head is the most complete human gesture of blessing and protection — parents, teachers, Gurus. The soul has been shown the divine and blessed by the one who showed them.
Have you ever been blessed by someone — genuinely, not just complimented — in a way that felt like it changed something in you? What happened?
