to live after he dies is to live a worthless life in this world. ||2||

In plain words

Die before the one you love — give yourself up completely, while you still can.

To live on after the one you love has departed — that is a worthless life.

Die before the one you love — give yourself up completely while you still can, rather than living on as a shell.
The deeper layer

Guru Angad's two-line teaching

This is one of the most compressed and haunting lines in the entire Vaar. Guru Angad (Mehl 2) says it in two lines that contain a lifetime:

Mar jīndo jis tū pi'āriā, jeevat mer ā mār. — "Die before the one whom you love; to live after he dies is to live a worthless life."

On the surface, this is about human love — the grief of outliving someone you love completely. But the spiritual application is immediate: die before the Lord by surrendering the ego completely. Jiwan mukti — liberation while living — requires this death of the self while the body still breathes.

The manmukh "lives on after the beloved has departed" in the sense that the ego persists even when the soul's true home — the divine — feels absent. The ego outlives every genuine encounter with the divine because it does not surrender. The result: a kind of living that is worthless, because the most essential thing is gone and only the shell remains.

The instruction

The teaching is to give yourself up — to die into the one you love — before the chance is taken away. While you have the capacity to surrender, surrender. Don't wait until the body is dying to attempt what could have been done while the mind was alive and willing.

A Question to Sit With

*What would it mean to give yourself completely to something — not holding any of yourself back? Is there anything in your life you love that much?*
