O Nanak, serve with this intuitive awareness; only that which is pleasing to the Lord is approved. ||2||

In plain words

With a mind surrounded and trapped by wickedness and evil, people do evil deeds. The mind is the environment that determines the action.

The ignorant worship duality — and in the Lord's Court they will be punished.

Worship the Lord — the Light of the soul. Without the True Guru, understanding doesn't come.

Real meditation, real patience, real self-discipline — these are found by surrendering to the True Guru's Will. By grace, they arrive.

The mind surrounded by wickedness generates evil — change the mind's environment through the Guru and the deeds change.
The deeper layer

The mind as environment

Bin satyhar man māyā vich, karat burā'e — "with the mind encircled by wickedness and evil, people do evil deeds." The image is spatial: the mind is encircled (vich, within/surrounded) by wickedness. The bad deeds are not a surprise — they are what flows from an environment that is corrupted. Change the environment of the mind and the actions change.

This is one of the Vaar's most important insights about moral behavior: action follows from mental environment. The person doing evil deeds is not necessarily worse than others in some absolute sense; they are living inside a mental environment that generates those deeds. The solution is to change the environment — through the Guru's teaching, through meditation, through the Naam.

The Lord as the Light of the soul

Har joti ātamā pū jin, bujhat bin satgur — "worship the Lord, the Light of the soul; without the True Guru, understanding is not obtained." The divine is the jot (light, flame) of the ātmā (soul). The Lord is not an external being to be appeased but the light of consciousness itself. Worshipping the Lord is recognizing and attending to the light that one's own awareness is.

Real austerity comes from surrendering to the Guru's Will

Tā ja p, tap sanjam, Gur surti parāpat — "meditation, penance and austere self-discipline are found by surrendering to the True Guru's Will." The deepest disciplines — the ones the tradition prizes most — are not achieved through effort. They are obtained through surrender. The Guru's Will, when genuinely surrendered to, generates the austerity that no amount of willpower-based practice can produce.

A Question to Sit With

*Have you noticed that when you're around certain people or in certain situations, you naturally behave differently? What does that tell you about the relationship between environment and action?*
