Translation by Dr. Sant Singh Khalsa
We're at the very end of Siree Raag. These last four pauris are Guru Ram Das's closing words — and they return to the simplest possible thing.
The Name of the Lord is pleasing. To meditate on it is great good fortune. The Perfect Guru has lived this, taught it, and attained everything through it.
And then a quiet, honest note: those who actually follow the Guru's teachings — who truly live them, not just know them — are rare.
After everything in Siree Raag — all the merchants, all the soul-brides, all the warnings about Maya, all the Bhagats speaking from outside the tradition — the end is this: the Name is pleasing. That's the whole teaching.
This shabad is headed 'Raag Maajh, Four-Verse Hymns, First House, Fourth Mehl' — it opens the next Raag rather than closing Siree Raag. After the Gurus' major shabads, the Vaars, the Ashtapadees, and the Bhagats, Guru Ram Das begins Maajh with extraordinary simplicity. Har har naamu manai mahaa sukh paaiyaa — the Name of the Lord brings the greatest peace. The Perfect Guru has both taught and embodied this. And how rare, the Guru notes, are those who actually follow.
If you had to say in one sentence what the whole of Siree Raag is about — based on everything you've encountered — what would you say?
