Translation by Dr. Sant Singh Khalsa
Make this body the field. Plant the seed of good actions in it. Water it with the Name of the one who holds everything in their hands.
Let your mind be the farmer — tending, clearing, giving attention.
The Lord will sprout in your heart. And you will arrive at the state of genuine peace.
This one turns your life into a farm, and gives every part a job.
Guru Nanak uses farming pictures many times in Siree Raag. Here he hands out the roles clearly. Ih tan dhartee: this body is the field. Beej karmaa karo: good actions are the seed. Salil aapaa-o saaringpaanee: water it with the Name of the One who holds the whole world. Man kirsaan: the mind is the farmer.
You can follow it step by step. Get the field ready: look after your body, with healthy habits. Plant the seed: good actions that come from a true heart. Water it: remember the Name. And let the mind be the farmer. A farmer doesn't just sit and wait. She is out in the field every day, pulling weeds and checking the soil.
Har ridai jammaa-ay: then the One sprouts in your heart. Pad nirbaanee is the state of nirvaan, freedom, when the fire of craving goes out. It isn't a place far away. It grows from what you planted.
If you planted the seeds of your current daily habits, what would grow? Is that what you want?
