The Wind Song / Only the Lord's Grace

ਆਖਣੁ ਸੁਨਣਾ ਪਉਣ ਕੀ ਬਾਣੀ ਇਹੁ ਮਨੁ ਰਤਾ ਮਾਇਆ ॥

This speaking and listening is like the song of the wind, for those whose minds are colored by the love of Maya.

khasam kee nadar dilahi pasinday jinee kar ayk Dhi-aa-i-aa. ||3||
The Grace of the Master is bestowed upon those who meditate on Him alone. They are pleasing to His Heart. ||3||

In plain words

All the speaking and listening — for those whose minds are colored by the love of appearances — is like the song of the wind. It passes through and leaves nothing.

But the grace of the Master is given to those who meditate on him alone. They are pleasing to his heart.

The same word is heard differently by a prepared and an unprepared ear — grace is what prepares the ear.
The deeper layer

This one says that words can pass right through us like wind, unless our hearts are turned toward the One.

Aakhan sunnaa pa-un kee banee: all the talking and listening is like a song of the wind. Ih man rataa maa-i-aa: for a mind colored by love of maya, the shiny world of stuff. The wind blows, the sound is there, but nothing takes root. It's like a teacher talking while a student wears headphones. The words fill the room but don't reach him.

Then the other side. Khasam kee nadar: the Master's kind glance, grace. It comes to those jinee kar ayk dhi-aa-i-aa, who remember the One alone. Their attention is gathered in one place, not scattered. That makes them open, so what they hear can land and grow like a seed. Dilahi pasinday: they are dear to the Master's heart.

A Question to Sit With

Have you ever heard something you'd heard before — and suddenly, this time, it actually landed? What was different about you when it finally got through?
