The True Qazi Renounces Self

ਸੋਈ ਕਾਜੀ ਜਿਨਿ ਆਪੁ ਤਜਿਆ ਇਕੁ ਨਾਮੁ ਕੀਆ ਆਧਾਰੋ ॥
so-ee kaajee jin aap taji-aa ik naam kee-aa aaDhaaro.
He alone is a Qazi, who renounces selfishness and conceit, and makes the One Name his Support.

The True Creator Lord is, and shall always be. He was not born; He shall not die. ||3||

In plain words

The true Qazi — the genuinely learned, the truly just — is the one who renounces selfishness and ego, and makes the one Name their only support.

The True Creator Lord is, and shall always be. He was not born. He shall not die.

This constancy — beyond birth and death — is the foundation you can actually build on.

The only foundation that cannot be shaken is the one that was never born and will never die.
The deeper layer

Here Guru Nanak offers an alternative definition of the Qazi — the Islamic judge — that transcends the institutional definition: the one who renounces man (selfhood, ego) and makes the Name the single support.

"Was not born, shall not die" (naa ko janamaa naa ko marnaa) — this is the attribute of the divine that makes it the only reliable foundation. Everything that is born eventually dies; therefore, everything born is not the ultimate ground. The birthless, deathless one is.

A Question to Sit With

What do you build your sense of security on? Is it something that can be taken away? What would it feel like if it were taken?
