Everyone Says He Is the Greatest

Everyone says that God is the Greatest of the Great. No one calls Him any less.
No one can estimate His Worth. By speaking of Him, His Greatness is not increased.
saachaa saahab ayk too hor jee-aa kaytay lo-a. ||3||
You are the One True Lord and Master of all the other beings, of so many worlds. ||3||

In plain words

Everyone says that the oneness is the greatest of the great. No one calls it smaller than it is.

But no one can actually say what it is worth. And speaking about it doesn't make it bigger.

You are the One True Master of all the other beings, of so many worlds.

Speaking of the divine's greatness doesn't increase it — but it changes us to try.
The deeper layer

This one says that praise doesn't make the One any bigger. The One is already as great as can be.

Sabh ko aakhai bahut bahut: "Everyone says, 'So great, so great!'" Ghat na aakhai ko-ay: "No one calls the One any less."

Keemat kinai na paa-ee-aa kahan na vadaa ho-ay: "No one has found the One's worth. Saying it doesn't make the One greater."

Think of the ocean. You can stand on the beach and shout, "You're huge!" The ocean doesn't get one drop bigger. It is exactly as big as it was.

That is a lesson in being humble, for everyone who talks about the One. We argue, we explain, we praise. The One stays exactly who the One is.

So why praise at all? Because our words are for us. Praising changes the one who praises. It turns our heart toward what is truly great.

A Question to Sit With

Why do you think people sing or pray or make art about things that are beyond words? What's the point of trying?
