The Body Softened by the Word / Seva Brings Peace

ਇਤੁ ਤਨਿ ਲਾਗੈ ਬਾਣੀਆ ॥

This body is softened with the Word of the Guru's Bani;
ਸੁਖੁ ਹੋਵੈ ਸੇਵ ਕਮਾਣੀਆ ॥
sukh hovai sayv kamaanee-aa.
you shall find peace, doing seva (selfless service).
ਸਭ ਦੁਨੀਆ ਆਵਣ ਜਾਣੀਆ ॥੩॥

All the world continues coming and going in reincarnation. ||3||

In plain words

This body is softened with the word of the Guru's teaching — made pliable, made responsive, rather than rigid.

You shall find peace in doing *seva* — selfless service. Not because service earns reward, but because service is the natural expression of a lamp that is burning.

All the world keeps coming and going in its old patterns. Those who serve — who give without keeping score — find the peace the world keeps chasing.

The lamp that is truly lit naturally warms whatever is near it — that is what service is.
The deeper layer

The closing pauri introduces sevā (selfless service) as the culmination of the lit lamp. When the lamp burns — when the practice is alive, the reverence is real, the understanding is present — what pours out naturally is service.

"Coming and going in reincarnation" — the world keeps cycling in its patterns. Those who serve have broken out of the cycle not by escaping it but by no longer being driven by it. Service is the natural overflow of the lamp that is truly lit.

A Question to Sit With

What is something you give — your time, your skill, your attention — that you give freely, without keeping track? What does it feel like to give that way?
