Sikhism·Siree Raag·Shabad 35
Verse 3 of 6

One Whom the Lord Merges Is Merged in the Shabad

sabad milai so mil rahai jis na-o aapay la-ay milaa-ay.
One whom the Lord merges into Himself is merged in the Shabad, and remains so merged.
No one merges with Him through the love of duality; over and over again, they come and go in reincarnation.
sabh meh ik varatdaa ayko rahi-aa samaa-ay.
The One Lord permeates all. The One Lord is pervading everywhere.
jis na-o aap da-i-aal ho-ay so gurmukh naam samaa-ay. ||2||
That Gurmukh, unto whom the Lord shows His Kindness, is absorbed in the Naam, the Name of the Lord. ||2||

In plain words

One whom the Lord merges into Himself is merged in the teaching, and remains so — permanently.

No one merges with Him through the love of duality — through trying to have the divine AND the ego, the truth AND the performance. Over and over in that case they come and go.

The One Lord permeates all. To the Gurmukh to whom He has revealed this, realization is given.

No one merges with the whole while still holding on to the divided self — the choice is the whole thing.
The deeper layer

The merging (samaanaa) is permanent for those who are merged through the Shabad — not through will, not through effort, but through the divine's own action. The barrier is dujaa bhaav (love of duality) — the split orientation that tries to hold both.

"Over and over they come and go" (vaar vaar aavai jaai) — this cycling is the condition of duality. Each cycle brings a moment of closeness followed by separation, because the fundamental division in the heart is not resolved.

A Question to Sit With

Is there a part of your life where you're trying to have two things that can't both be fully held? What would choosing one look like?
