In plain words

It is very difficult to serve the True Teacher. The requirement: surrender your head. Give up your selfishness.

When you realize the Shabad — when it actually lands and changes you — you meet the Lord, and your service is accepted.

By personally experiencing the personality of the Guru, your own personality is uplifted. Your light merges with their light.

Surrender is the hardest thing — and it is exactly what the door to union requires.
The deeper layer

Sar deu (surrender the head) — the head, in South Asian symbolic systems, represents the ego, the prideful self. Surrendering the head is not literal — it is the offering of the ego-self in service of something larger.

This is described as "very difficult" (aatee anhat) — and it is. The ego does not give itself up willingly. The difficulty is acknowledged. But the outcome — personality uplifted, light merging with light — is worth the surrender.

A Question to Sit With

What is the thing you find hardest to give up — control, being right, a particular image of yourself? What would your life look like if you could offer that up?
