For the Gurmukh, love of the Lord's Name is chanting, deep prayer and self-control, all in one.
The Gurmukh always remembers the Name of the One Creator.
O Nanak, remember the Name. It is the Support of all beings.
This line says: for someone who follows the Guru, loving the Name holds every spiritual practice inside it.
Gurmukh jap tap sanjmee har kai naam pi-aar: for the Gurmukh, the one who follows the Guru, love of the Lord's Name is jap, tap and sanjam, all at once. Jap is repeating God's Name. Tap is hard self-training. Sanjam is self-control, holding yourself steady.
These were three separate paths people worked at for years. Here all three fit inside one thing: love of the Name.
Think of a good breakfast that gives you energy, focus and a happy mood at once. You don't need three different meals. When the Name is truly held in love, it gives what the other practices were reaching for.
Gurmukh sadaa dhi-aa-ee-ai ayk naam kartaar: the Gurmukh always remembers the Name of the One Creator.
Naanak naam dhi-aa-ee-ai sabhnaa jee-aa kaa aadhaar: O Nanak, remember the Name. It is the aadhaar, the support, the ground, of every living being.
