If the Word of the Guru's Shabad abides deep within, then you shall not forget the Lord. ||1||Pause||

Translation by Dr. Sant Singh Khalsa

In plain words

O mind, always remember the Lord. Stay in His shelter.

If the Guru's Word lives deep inside you, you will not forget the Lord.

The Shabad abiding within prevents the forgetting — it is the anchor that holds when circumstances pull.
The deeper layer

This is the pause line, the Rahao, the center of the whole song. It gives the answer: keep the One close, and you will not forget.

Man ray sadaa bhajahu har sarnaa-ee — O mind, always sing and remember the Lord, and stay in His shelter. Two things work together here. Jap means repeating the Name. Simran means remembering the One with your whole attention.

Gur kaa sabad antar vasai taa har visar na jaa-ee — when the Guru's Word, the Shabad, lives deep inside you, you will not forget the Lord.

Think of a song you have heard so many times that it plays in your head on its own. You don't have to try to remember it. It is just there. The Shabad can become like that. With repetition and real attention, it hums quietly in the background of your day.

And when it is there, it keeps you from drifting. It is what stops the forgetting that leads people to grab the poison in the verse before.

A Question to Sit With

What practices in your life serve as anchors — things that keep you from drifting from what matters? Are they working?
