Translation by Dr. Sant Singh Khalsa
Receiving the Naam — the Name of the Lord — the mind is satisfied. Without the Naam, life is cursed.
If I meet the Gurmukh, my Spiritual Friend, he will show me God, the Treasure of Excellence.
I am every bit a sacrifice to the one who reveals to me the Naam. Every bit.
This one says the Name fills the heart, and Guru Ram Das longs for a friend who can show him the way.
Naam milai man tripat-ee-ai — when the Name comes, the mind is full and happy. Without it, life feels empty and wrong.
Ko-ee gurmukh sajan jay milai — if only I could meet a Gurmukh friend. Sajan means a dear friend, a close companion. Guru Ram Das often speaks of this friend. He is looking for someone who already knows the way. Not to worship them, but to walk beside them and learn which way leads to the One.
Think of a new kid at school. What they want most is one friend who already knows where everything is.
Ha-o tis vitahu cha-o khannee-ai — I would give every piece of myself to that friend. This is a full offering. It isn't made at some ceremony. It comes from a heart that truly longs for the Name.
Who in your life has served as a 'spiritual friend' — someone whose genuine goodness has shown you a direction? What did they show you, and how?
