Translation by Dr. Sant Singh Khalsa
For a brief moment, man is a guest of the Lord. He tries to resolve his affairs.
Engrossed in Maya and sexual desire, the fool does not understand.
He arises and departs with regret, and falls into the clutches of the Messenger of Death.
This one says life is a short visit, and a person caught up in wanting can miss what the visit was for.
Gharhee muhat kaa paahunaa — a guest for just a moment. A human life is a short stay in the Lord's house. The guest tries to sort out his affairs while he's there. Kaaj savaaranhaar — he's busy getting things done.
But caught up in Maya, the world's glitter, and in kaam, strong desire, he doesn't see what his real job was.
Think of visiting a grandparent's house and spending the whole time on your phone. Then it's time to leave, and you never really talked to them.
Uth chali-aa pachhutaa-i-aa — he gets up and leaves, full of regret. He never understood he was a guest, and never met the Host. Then he falls into the grip of the Messenger of Death, the one who comes when life ends, meeting him unready.
If you think of your life as a guest-stay — that you are being hosted, that this home is not permanently yours — how does that change how you feel about it?
