Those Whom God Unites with Himself Are Liberated

Through 8.4 million incarnations you have wandered, to obtain this rare and precious human life.

O Nanak, remember the Naam, the Name of the Lord; the day of departure is drawing near! ||4||22||92||

In plain words

Those whom God Himself unites with Himself — they are liberated.

Meditating on the Naam, the cycle of coming and going is ended. The journey stops.

O Nanak — focus your mind on God, and find peace in the Saadh Sangat.

God Himself unites the soul with Himself — the liberation is His act, completed when He wills it.
The deeper layer

The closing pauri resolves the shabad's urgency (departure is near, provision-gathering required) with the one resolution: God Himself unites the soul with Himself (aap milaa-ei-aa). The agent is always the divine. The soul does not engineer its own liberation — it is given.

"Cycle of coming and going" — aavan jaanaa — the reincarnation cycle that the 8.4-million-births journey represents. The Naam ends this cycle: not by philosophical rejection of rebirth, but by the soul being united with what it was always seeking.

A Question to Sit With

What is the quality of peace you experience in the company of genuine, grounded people? How is it different from being alone or with distracting company?
