Sukhmani Sahib
Commentary

Raag Gauree Sukhmani, Ashtapadee 10, Mehl 5 (Guru Arjan)

The census of everything - and the intimacy at the end of it.

The Arc

The salok sets the frame: many praise Him; no one finds His limit. Eight pauris then swing the phrase ka-ee kot - "many millions" - across all existence. P1 counts the seekers (devotees, pilgrims, penitents, poets) - and none find the limit. P2 counts the lost (misers, slanderers, thieves) in the same steady voice, closing with the line that keeps even them inside the page: whatever He attaches them to, with that they are engaged. P3 leaves humanity: birds, snakes, stones, elements, stars, gods and demons - all beads on His one thread. P4 counts even the three gunas as creatures and delivers the center: near to all, far from all; distinct, while pervading all. P5 counts the world's uneven seats - the fed and the exhausted, the wealthy and the anxious - all held in one Hand. P6 counts the fortunate: four longings, four fulfillments, no failures filed. P7 reaches the galaxies: expansion after expansion, emanation and merger, the One forever One, existing of and by Himself. P8 counts the completed - and turns the telescope around: He remembers His servants with each and every breath.

Key Vocabulary

  • ka-ee kot - "many millions"; the anaphora of the whole ashtapadee.
  • nit navay - eternally new (P1); the Naam as the one practice with no shelf life.
  • sootir dhaaree - strung on His thread (P3); repeated from Ashtapadee 4.
  • sabh tay nayrai sabh tay door - near to all, far from all (P4).
  • khand brahmand - continents and cosmic eggs; galaxies (P7).
  • kaee baar pasrio paasaar - many times He has expanded the expansion (P7).
  • tat kay baytay - knowers of the essence (P8).

Themes and Cross-Connections

This is Sukhmani's Japji-vastness movement: the direct heir of asankh (Japji 17-19 - which also counted saints and sinners in the same meter) and of Japji 22's worlds upon worlds. The dark census (P2) practices the wide mercy of B00C916 (whom shall we call bad?); the social census (P5) refuses both complacency and despair - the seat is assignment, not worth (Guru Arjan's langar being the practical footnote). P4's near-and-far paradox states the Creator's lotus-detachment, matching the Brahm Giani's (Asht. 8) - the human portrait and the cosmic signature are the same. P7's breathing cosmos (emanation and merger, the One forever One) is Ik Onkar as cosmology. And P8's reversal - He remembers His servants breath by breath - transforms the entire bani's practice: simran is not a call into silence but one half of a mutual remembering.

Translation Notes

  • P4: SSK renders the three gunas descriptively ("heated activity, slothful darkness and peaceful light") for raajas taamas satagee - a helpful unpacking; the children's section keeps "three weathers" to hold the triad in one image.
  • P7: aapan aap aapeh upaa-io territory - SSK's "Of Himself, and by Himself, God exists" reaches back to the Mool Mantar's Saibhang; the commentary keeps that link explicit.
  • P8: saas saas simrai... - the subject is God remembering the servants; some readers assume the reverse. The reversal is the Gurmukhi's own and is the ashtapadee's crowning point.

For Raag Gauree

Gauree spent nine ashtapadees inside the human heart; the tenth opens the observatory door. The raag's discipline holds even at cosmic scale - the census never loses its meter - and its finding is Gauree's oldest one, now proven on galaxies: many, many, many; and One.
