Sukhmani Sahib
Commentary

Raag Gauree Sukhmani, Ashtapadee 14, Mehl 5 (Guru Arjan)

Take your weight off mortal shoulders - and re-hire the whole body for remembrance.

The Arc

The salok retires cleverness and re-anchors hope in the One: pain, doubt and fear leave together. P1 load-rates human reliance - people can hold your hand, not your weight; the Name is worn as a necklace at the pulse. P2 re-employs the body organ by organ (mind to praise, tongue to Nectar, eyes to wonder, feet to the Way) - the deliberate mirror of Ashtapadee 5's audit of false organs. P3 redefines fortune (singing), wealth (dwelling in the Name) and integrity (thought, word, deed in agreement), and crowns perception: recognizing the One as One. P4 gives the deepest release: understand yourself and thirst ends; stay in the household, balanced and unattached. P5 holds the bani's most joyful line - searching, searching, searching, and finally, success! - and its result: Him at the root of everything, subtle and manifest. P6 opens the vertiginous depth: nothing is born, nothing dies; the Imperishable under the universe; even our meditating is His inspiration. P7 shows the finder's runoff: sorrows forgotten around God's servants. P8 closes with the life-rule (do everything for love of God), the sweetness of His doings, the great circle (from Him, into Him) - and the third sounding of the bani's boldest chord: God and His servant are one and the same.

Key Vocabulary

  • maanukh kee tayk - reliance on mortals (P1); load-rating, not cynicism.
  • kanth - the throat/necklace (P1); the Name worn at the pulse.
  • bi-uhaar - occupation, trade (P2); praise as the mind's employment.
  • man bach kram - thought, word and deed (P3); the triple alignment.
  • grihasat meh soudaas - unattached in the midst of household (P4).
  • khojat khojat khojat... seejhai - searching, searching, searching... success! (P5).
  • sookham / asthool - the subtle and the manifest (P5).
  • prabh jan ayk - God and His servant are one (P8).

Themes and Cross-Connections

This ashtapadee is Sukhmani's constructive turn after the dark thirteenth: trust rebuilt on the one bearing wall. P2's organ-re-employment answers Asht. 5's organ-audit point for point - the project's clearest before/after of the same body under two managements. P4's self-understanding-ends-thirst is Aap Pachhaan (B00C909/917) in Sukhmani's own voice; the household-balance line is Grihast doctrine verbatim. P5's triple-searching honors the seeker's real ratio and hands the finding to grace (Upside-Down Vessel). P6's nothing-born-nothing-dies is the wave/ocean teaching at full depth, twin to Anand Sahib's deathless soul. P8's closing identity completes Sukhmani's three-step crescendo - the Holy merged (7), the Brahm Giani as the Supreme (8), and now the servant and God "one and the same" - each preceded by a hymn's worth of humility that makes the claim safe.

Translation Notes

  • P1: tayk - support, prop, reliance; SSK "reliance... is in vain" - the target is ultimate reliance, not human friendship; the children's section keeps the distinction (hand vs. weight).
  • P5: the Gurmukhi's triple khojat is preserved by SSK ("searching, searching, searching") - the stutter of the line is its meaning and is kept verbatim in the children's section.
  • P8: prabh kaa kee-aa meethaa maanai SSK renders "God's doings are sweet to His humble servant" - taste-language, not endurance-language; the distinction (sweet, not merely accepted) is the Jivan Mukta teaching and is preserved.

For Raag Gauree

After the thirteenth's storm, Gauree rebuilds: a hymn of re-anchoring, re-employment and re-finding, ending in the raag's characteristic quiet audacity - the servant, dressed in the One's own honor, indistinguishable from the One. The discipline was never for its own sake; this is what it was for.
