The Mind Seeking Him Is a Wave Searching Its Ocean
Translation by Dr. Sant Singh Khalsa
He teaches, and He is the student learning. He mingles Himself through everyone.
He spread out His own expanse; everything in it is His.
Without Him, what could even be attempted? In the spaces, and in the gaps between spaces - the One.
In His own play He is the Actor - staging endless varieties of Himself. He is in the mind, and the mind is in Him. No one can put a price on this.
This one says the mind looking for the One is inside the One, like a wave searching for the ocean it is made of.
The verse takes away every "two" that is left. Teacher and student are both the One. Aap updaysai samjhai aap — He teaches, and He Himself understands. Every lesson in the world is the One passing understanding from one hand to the other. The actor and the play are both the One too.
Then comes a line that puts the one who is looking into the picture. Man meh aap man apunay maahi — He is in the mind, and the mind is in Him. The mind searching for God holds God, and is held by God. It is like a wave searching for the ocean, while being made of water.
For this song about pride, that is the last word. There is no separate stage left to be proud on. The one praising, the One praised, the praising, and the pride were all made of one thing all along.
Seeing this is not shameful. It brings wonder. Naanak keemat kahan na jaa-ay — His worth cannot be told. The freed mind stops measuring and starts adoring.
When you think about God, who is doing the thinking - and what is the thinking made of?
