Where No One Else Can Go, the Name Goes With You
Translation by Dr. Sant Singh Khalsa
There is a place where mother, father, friends, brothers and sisters cannot come with you. There, only the Name goes with you, holding you up.
Where the great darkness of death presses down, the Name stays beside you.
Where the troubles are too heavy to lift, the Name lifts you out in an instant.
A million rituals cannot do this. But the Name washes away a million mistakes. Keep the Name through the Guru, dear mind. Nanak says: endless joy will find you.
Wherever no one else can go with you, the Name goes with you.
This part of the song is built from "where" lines. Jah, jah, jah — where, where, where. Each one names a place people fear most. The place family cannot follow. The road walked alone. The dark.
Jah maat pitaa sut meet na bhaa-ee — where there is no mother, father, child, friend, or brother. Man oohaa naam tayrai sang sahaa-ee — O mind, there the Naam, the Name, is with you as your helper. Into each lonely place, one friend is set: the Name.
This does not say our family does not matter. They matter a great deal. It is an honest map of places where they cannot come. Think of a child walking into a new classroom. Mom waves at the door and cannot come in. But something from home, carried inside, comes along.
Then Guru Arjan sets two lines side by side. Anik punahcharan karat nahee tarai — doing countless rituals, you do not get across. Har ko naam kot paap parharai — the Name washes away millions of wrongs. The difference is love instead of trading. It is a relationship, not a deal. Grace, Gurprasad, is a gift, never a payment plan.
What is the loneliest situation you can imagine - and what, honestly, could still be with you there?
