Translation by Dr. Sant Singh Khalsa
Again and again - and again - remember the One. This nectar satisfies mind and body both.
The jewel of the Name comes to those who face the light - and then they see nothing anywhere but Him.
For them the Name is wealth, the Name is beauty and delight, the Name is peace, the Name is the friend who walks with them. Drenched - mind and body - in the Name.
Standing, sitting, sleeping: the Name. That is the servant's whole occupation - and it is enough.
The Name does many jobs at once: it is wealth, beauty, peace and a friend.
This pauri gathers Sukhmani's teachings about the Naam, the Name, into a picture of everyday home life. The jewel of the Name comes to the gurmukh, the one who faces the Guru, who faces the light. Facing the light is the only thing needed.
Then comes a list of swaps: naam dhan naamo roop rang — the Name is wealth, the Name is beauty and delight. Each swap answers an earlier part of Sukhmani. The Name is wealth, in place of the money traders chase. It is beauty, in place of the beauty that fades. It is peace, the very peace promised in Sukhmani's own name, "jewel of peace." And it is a companion, for the lonely road Sukhmani described, now walked with a friend.
Man tan naameh naam samaanay — mind and body are drenched in the Name. Rang also means color, and this is a dyeing picture. Remembrance is not sprinkled on. It soaks all the way through, like a T-shirt dipped in dye.
Then the list of positions: oothat baithat sovat naam — standing, sitting, sleeping, the Name. Remembrance is not an appointment on the calendar. It is the background of every moment. Even sleep is part of the work. So one job is enough, because it covers everything.
What one thing, if you had it fully, would replace the need for several other things you chase?
