Furnish both your houses - this world and the next - with one furnishing: the Name set deep in the heart.
Complete is the teaching of the complete guide; the one in whose mind it settles realizes the Truth. Chant with mind and body; attune yourself in love -
and sorrow, pain and fear leave the premises. Deal in the true trade, trader: merchandise that arrives safe at the court of Truth.
Keep the One's support in your mind - and the long commuting of the soul is over.
This one says to furnish both your homes, this world and the next, with the one thing that belongs in both.
halat palat du-ay layho savaar — make both this world and the next beautiful. How? raam naam antar ur Dhaar — keep the One's Name deep in your heart.
Think of two houses. Most decorations fit only one of them, and often the wrong one: lots of stuff here, nothing there. The Name is the one piece of furniture that belongs in both.
Sukhmani speaks to the trader one last time: sach vaapaar karahu vaapaaree — do the true trade, O trader. Then comes the detail that finishes the picture: dargeh nibhai khayp tumaaree — your goods will arrive safe in the One's court. It is the one shipment that crosses without being stopped, damaged or marked down. The salok of the nineteenth section said the same: only devotion goes through.
naanak bahur na aavahi jaahi — you will not have to come and go again. That is the oldest tiredness in India's old stories: being born, dying and being born again. Here the long trip is over, and the traveler is home. That is why readers of Sukhmani keep coming back to this pauri. The trade was made in time.
You are furnishing two houses with every choice. Which one has been getting all your shopping?
