Scrubbing the Outside Doesn't Make You Clean
Translation by Dr. Sant Singh Khalsa
Just washing the outside of your body doesn't make you truly clean.
Real cleanness is on the inside — a person is pure when the One lives in their heart.
This shalok challenges the idea that purity is about outer washing: they are not pure who sit down after merely washing their bodies. You can scrub the outside spotless and still carry dishonesty and unkindness within. Real purity, the shalok says, is inner: only they are pure within whose minds the Lord abides. A clean heart, not a clean body, is what makes a person 'pure' in the way that matters. (The verse opens with a bodily comparison the tradition uses to picture how falsehood keeps recurring in a false person; the enduring teaching, carried here, is simply that genuine purity is about what fills the heart, not the surface of the skin.) It's a freeing idea for a child: you don't become good by washing or by any outer act — you become good by what you let live inside you.
What makes a person truly 'clean' on the inside, do you think?
