O Nanak, the Gurmukhs, who understand the Lord, are not stained by impurity. ||3||

In plain words

Underneath it all, the only real 'impurity' is forgetting the One and feeling separate and divided.

Being born and dying happen by the One's Will; by that Will we come and go.

Eating and drinking are perfectly pure — the One feeds everyone. A heart that understands this is not stained by impurity at all.

The only real impurity is forgetting the One and feeling divided — remember, and you're free of all the anxious rules.
The deeper layer

Here the sutak teaching reaches its deepest point: the only real impurity is forgetting the One.

Sabho sootak bharam hai doojai lagai jaa-ay — all impurity comes from doubt, and from doojaa, duality. Duality means feeling split off from the One, living in a worried "me versus them" way. That is the only dirt that matters.

Being born and dying happen by the One's Hukam, the flow of the One's Will. By that Will we come and go.

Then it settles the everyday worry. Khaanaa peenaa pavitar hai — eating and drinking are pure, because the One gives food to all. Food from the One's own hand cannot be unclean.

So the Gurmukhs, the people who face the Guru and understand, are not stained. They have stepped out of the anxious game of clean and dirty into the freedom of a heart that trusts the One.

Think of the three sutak shaloks as three steps. First, the old idea falls apart. Second, real dirt is greed, lies, envy and gossip. Third, the root of it all is forgetting the One. Keep your mind, words and wants clean, remember the One, and you are free.

A Question to Sit With

How does it feel to know goodness is about your heart, not about following lots of anxious 'clean/dirty' rules?
