The Closing Saloks, Savaiye in Praise of Guru Amar Das (the bard Bhikhaa)

Sweet words are not the real thing; the real thing touches you all the way down.

The Arc

Bhikhaa’s second savaiya, an honest testimony of seeking: many holy people met, all eloquent, yet after a year of wandering none had touched his soul — until the Lord led him to the Guru.

Themes and Cross-Connections

The theme is discernment between polished show and living substance — a formalism critique aimed evenhandedly at every kind of teacher. The resolution is grace: gur dayi milaayau, the Lord led him; the meeting was received, not earned.

Translation Notes

  • The critique of hermits, ascetics, and scholars is kept evenhanded across traditions, never targeting one.
  • The finding of the Guru is framed as grace received, in keeping with the project lens.
