The Commentary
Salok Sehskritee is composed in sehaskritee — a Sanskritized register that would have sounded learned and elevated to its first hearers. Part of its quiet argument is made by its very form: it borrows the prestige-language of scholarship in order to say that scholarship, ritual, and ornament are not the point. Carry the teaching, not the ornament.
