Savaiye in Praise of Guru Arjun, the Fifth (Bhatt Kall), Verse 1 — in the House of Guru Ram Das, a new light
Translation by Dr. Sant Singh Khalsa
There is only One. And the One is found by the True Guru's grace — a gift that is always here, waiting for an open heart.
I remember the First Being, the One who never moves and never dies. Remembering the One washes away the dirt of a twisted, unkind mind.
I hold the lotus feet of the True Guru in my heart. Calmly and easily, I think over the good qualities of Guru Arjun.
He came into the light in the house of Guru Ram Das, and every hope and wish came true.
From his birth he knew the One through the Guru's teaching. Kal says: with my palms pressed together, I sing his praise.
The One brought him into the world to live the way of loving devotion. The Guru's Word shone out, and the One lives on his tongue.
Holding on to Guru Nanak, Guru Angad and Guru Amar Das, he reached the highest place. In the house of Guru Ram Das, Guru Arjun, the One's devotee, was born.
Guru Arjun was born in the house of Guru Ram Das, and from the start he knew the One through the Guru's teaching.
These are the first of the Savaiye in praise of Guru Arjun, the Fifth Guru, sung by the bard Kal, one of the bhatts, poets who sang the praise of the Gurus. They begin with remembering the One who never moves and never dies (achal abhinaasee). Remembering washes away durmat mal, the dirt of a twisted mind.
Bhagat jog, the way of loving devotion, is the shape of Guru Arjun's whole life. The light that shone in Guru Nanak, Guru Angad and Guru Amar Das shines in him. The line gur arjun ghar gur raamdaas (Guru Arjun, in the house of Guru Ram Das) comes back again and again in these verses.
What good thing began small and quiet before it grew into something big?
