The Closing Saloks, Savaiye in Praise of Guru Amar Das (the bard Jall)

One wisdom, handed along, loosens what the world ties tight.

The Arc

A single verse tracing one understanding through a chain of devotees and older seekers, and into Guru Amar Das, where it becomes the release of greed, anger, and craving, and the knowing of the way.

Themes and Cross-Connections

The chain of names — Jaidev, Namdev, Trilochan, Kabir — foregrounds the tradition’s caste-leveling: the same wisdom flowered in weavers and outcasts and kings alike. The theme is continuity: wisdom is not reinvented but received and lived.

Translation Notes

  • Devotees and older figures are named as respectful pointers; the humble backgrounds of several are quietly honored, in keeping with the caste-leveling spirit.
