Savaiye in praise of Guru Ram Das, Verse 14 — wash your mind in clear water
Translation by Dr. Sant Singh Khalsa
Repeat "Guru, Guru, Guru, Guru, Guru," and know him as true.
Know the One as the treasure of every good quality, beyond reach. Keep the One in your mind, meditate day and night, and hold the Guru's words in your heart.
Then bathe in the Guru's clean, bottomless water. O saints and Sikhs of the Guru, cross the ocean of love for the True Naam.
Lovingly remember, always, the One who holds no hate, has no form and knows no fear. Enjoy the Guru's Word with love, and keep devotion to the One firm inside.
O foolish mind, let go of your doubts. Turn to the Guru and remember the Naam. Repeat "Guru, Guru, Guru, Guru, Guru," and know him as true.
Wash your mind in the Guru's clear water, and turn toward the One who holds no hate.
The verse begins and ends with "Guroo gur guroo gur," the Guru's name said again and again. It asks us to know him as true, and to keep his teaching in our hearts day and night.
Bimal athaah majan means bathing in clean, bottomless water: washing the mind. Think of rinsing off after a long, muddy game. You come out fresh.
A key word here is nirvair, without hate. It is one of the words the Mool Mantar, the opening lines of the Guru Granth Sahib, uses for the One. The One is also nirbha-o, without fear. When we keep turning toward a One who holds no grudge and fears nothing, we slowly grow more like that too.
The verse ends by asking the foolish mind to drop its doubts, and to remember the Naam as a gurmukh, one who faces the Guru.
What helps you wash off a hard day so it does not stick to you?
