Savaiye in praise of Guru Ram Das, Verse 13 — a name worth keeping on your tongue

ਗੁਰੂ ਗੁਰੁ ਗੁਰੂ ਗੁਰੁ ਗੁਰੂ ਜਪੁ ਪ੍ਰਾਨੀਅਹੁ ॥
guroo gur guroo gur guroo jap paraanee-ahu.
Chant Guru, Guru, Guru, Guru, Guru, O mortal beings.
ਸਬਦੁ ਹਰਿ ਹਰਿ ਜਪੈ ਨਾਮੁ ਨਵ ਨਿਧਿ ਅਪੈ ਰਸਨਿ ਅਹਿਨਿਸਿ ਰਸੈ ਸਤਿ ਕਰਿ ਜਾਨੀਅਹੁ ॥
sabad har har japai naam nav niDh apai rasan ahinis rasai sat kar jaanee-ahu.
Chant the Shabad, the Word of the Lord, Har, Har; the Naam, the Name of the Lord, brings the nine treasures. With your tongue, taste it, day and night, and know it as true.
ਫੁਨਿ ਪ੍ਰੇਮ ਰੰਗ ਪਾਈਐ ਗੁਰਮੁਖਹਿ ਧਿਆਈਐ ਅੰਨ ਮਾਰਗ ਤਜਹੁ ਭਜਹੁ ਹਰਿ ਗ੍ਯ੍ਯਾਨੀਅਹੁ ॥
fun paraym rang paa-ee-ai gurmukheh Dhi-aa-ee-ai ann maarag tajahu bhajahu har gayaanee-ahu.
Then, you shall obtain His Love and Affection; become Gurmukh, and meditate on Him. Give up all other ways; vibrate and meditate on Him, O spiritual people.
ਬਚਨ ਗੁਰ ਰਿਦਿ ਧਰਹੁ ਪੰਚ ਭੂ ਬਸਿ ਕਰਹੁ ਜਨਮੁ ਕੁਲ ਉਧਰਹੁ ਦ੍ਵਾਰਿ ਹਰਿ ਮਾਨੀਅਹੁ ॥
bachan gur rid Dharahu panch bhoo bas karahu janam kul uDhrahu davaar har maanee-ahu.
Enshrine the Word of the Guru's Teachings within your heart, and overpower the five passions. Your life, and your generations, shall be saved, and you shall be honored at the Lord's Door.
ਜਉ ਤ ਸਭ ਸੁਖ ਇਤ ਉਤ ਤੁਮ ਬੰਛਵਹੁ ਗੁਰੂ ਗੁਰੁ ਗੁਰੂ ਗੁਰੁ ਗੁਰੂ ਜਪੁ ਪ੍ਰਾਨੀਅਹੁ ॥੧॥੧੩॥
ja-o ta sabh sukh it ut tum banchhvahu guroo gur guroo gur guroo jap paraanee-ahu. ||1||13||
If you desire all the peace and comforts of this world and the next, then chant Guru, Guru, Guru, Guru, Guru, O mortal beings. ||1||13||

In plain words

O people, repeat "Guru, Guru, Guru, Guru, Guru."

Repeat the Word, "Har, Har." The Naam gives the nine treasures. Taste it with your tongue day and night, and know it as true.

Then you will be dyed in love. Turn to the Guru and remember the One. Leave other paths behind, O wise ones, and keep the One in mind.

Keep the Guru's words in your heart and bring the five passions under control. Your own life and your whole family will be lifted, and you will be honored at the One's door.

If you want every comfort here and hereafter, O people, repeat "Guru, Guru, Guru, Guru, Guru."

What you hold in your heart reaches your whole family.
The deeper layer

Keep the Guru's name on your tongue, and your life and your family are lifted.

Jholnaa names the meter, a swinging, lullaby-like rhythm. The repeated "Guru, Guru, Guru" is remembrance held on the tongue and in the heart. The promise widens outward: janam kul udhrahu, your life and your family line are lifted. Sat kar jaanee-ahu, know it as true, means to live from it as well as to repeat it.
