Savaiye in Praise of Guru Amar Das (by the bard Bhikhaa), Verse 19 — when the inside noise settles
Translation by Dr. Sant Singh Khalsa
Through the Guru's wisdom and deep meditation, a person's inner self merges with the essence of everything.
The True One is known in truth, when you tune in with love and a single-pointed mind.
Desire and anger come under control when the breath stops flying around, wandering restlessly.
Living in the land of the Formless One and understanding the hukam, the flow of life, a person finds wisdom.
In this dark age, the Guru is the form of the Creator, the First Being. Only the one who has tried it knows.
Bhikhaa says: I have met that Guru. With love and natural ease, he has let me see him.
When the mind gathers to one point through the Guru's wisdom, desire and anger cool and what is true comes through.
This is the first savaiya of the Bhatt Bhikhaa. Through the Guru's wisdom and stillness, one's essence merges with the essence of everything (tat si-o tat). Truth is known with one-pointed love; desire and anger cool when the breath and mind stop racing. Living in the land of the Formless and understanding hukam brings wisdom. In this age, Bhikhaa says, the Guru is the very form of the Creator, and only one who has tried it knows (so jaanai jin kichh kee-a-o), an appeal to lived experience over hearsay.
What helps your mind get quiet enough to hear yourself think?
