Savaiye in praise of Guru Ram Das, Verse 8 — without a light you cannot see the road

gur bin ghor anDhaar guroo bin samajh na aavai.
Without the Guru, there is utter darkness; without the Guru, understanding does not come.
gur bin surat na siDh guroo bin mukat na paavai.
Without the Guru, there is no intuitive awareness or success; without the Guru, there is no liberation.
gur kar sach beechaar guroo kar ray man mayray.
So make Him your Guru, and contemplate the Truth; make Him your Guru, O my mind.
gur kar sabad sapunn aghan kateh sabh tayray.
Make Him your Guru, who is embellished and exalted in the Word of the Shabad; all your sins shall be washed away.
gur na-yan ba-yan gur gur karahu guroo sat kav nal-y kahi.
So speaks NALL the poet: with your eyes, make Him your Guru; with the words you speak, make Him your Guru, your True Guru.
jin guroo na daykhi-a-o nahu kee-a-o tay akyath sansaar meh. ||4||8||
Those who have not seen the Guru, who have not made Him their Guru, are useless in this world. ||4||8||

In plain words

Without the Guru, there is deep darkness. Without the Guru, understanding does not come.

Without the Guru, there is no awareness and no success. Without the Guru, no one finds freedom.

So make him your Guru and think on what is true. Make him your Guru, O my mind.

Make him your Guru, who is full of the Word, and all your wrongdoing will be cut away.

Nal the poet says: with your eyes and with your words, make him your Guru, your True Guru.

Those who have never seen the Guru, who have never made him their Guru, live in this world without bearing fruit.

Without a light you cannot see the road; the Guru is that light.
The deeper layer

Without the Guru the road is dark, so make him your guide.

The bard is Nal. The verse is built on bin, without: without the Guru, darkness; no surat, awareness; no mukat, freedom. The last line says those who never found the Guru are akyath, without fruit, like a tree that never gives anything. The weight rests on the invitation that comes again and again: gur kar, make him your Guru.

A Question to Sit With

Who has been a light that helped you see a path you could not see alone?
