Savaiye in praise of Guru Ram Das, Verse 10 — the Guru's word, your own treasure

ਸਿਰੀ ਗੁਰੂ ਸਿਰੀ ਗੁਰੂ ਸਿਰੀ ਗੁਰੂ ਸਤਿ ਜੀਉ ॥
siree guroo siree guroo siree guroo sat jee-o.
The Supreme Guru, the Supreme Guru, the Supreme Guru, the True, Dear Lord.
ਗੁਰ ਕਹਿਆ ਮਾਨੁ ਨਿਜ ਨਿਧਾਨੁ ਸਚੁ ਜਾਨੁ ਮੰਤ੍ਰੁ ਇਹੈ ਨਿਸਿ ਬਾਸੁਰ ਹੋਇ ਕਲ੍ਯ੍ਯਾਨੁ ਲਹਹਿ ਪਰਮ ਗਤਿ ਜੀਉ ॥
gur kahi-aa maan nij niDhaan sach jaan mantar ihai nis baasur ho-ay kal-yaan laheh param gat jee-o.
Respect and obey the Guru's Word; this is your own personal treasure - know this mantra as true. Night and day, you shall be saved, and blessed with the supreme status.
ਕਾਮੁ ਕ੍ਰੋਧੁ ਲੋਭੁ ਮੋਹੁ ਜਣ ਜਣ ਸਿਉ ਛਾਡੁ ਧੋਹੁ ਹਉਮੈ ਕਾ ਫੰਧੁ ਕਾਟੁ ਸਾਧਸੰਗਿ ਰਤਿ ਜੀਉ ॥
kaam kroDh lobh moh jan jan si-o chhaad Dhohu ha-umai kaa fanDh kaat saaDhsang rat jee-o.
Renounce sexual desire, anger, greed and attachment; give up your games of deception. Snap the noose of egotism, and let yourself be at home in the Saadh Sangat, the Company of the Holy.
ਦੇਹ ਗੇਹੁ ਤ੍ਰਿਅ ਸਨੇਹੁ ਚਿਤ ਬਿਲਾਸੁ ਜਗਤ ਏਹੁ ਚਰਨ ਕਮਲ ਸਦਾ ਸੇਉ ਦ੍ਰਿੜਤਾ ਕਰੁ ਮਤਿ ਜੀਉ ॥
dayh gayhu tari-a sanayhu chit bilaas jagat ayhu charan kamal sadaa say-o darirh-taa kar mat jee-o.
Free your consciousness of attachment to your body, your home, your spouse, and the pleasures of this world. Serve forever at His Lotus Feet, and firmly implant these teachings within.
ਨਾਮੁ ਸਾਰੁ ਹੀਏ ਧਾਰੁ ਤਜੁ ਬਿਕਾਰੁ ਮਨ ਗਯੰਦ ਸਿਰੀ ਗੁਰੂ ਸਿਰੀ ਗੁਰੂ ਸਿਰੀ ਗੁਰੂ ਸਤਿ ਜੀਉ ॥੫॥੧੦॥
naam saar hee-ay Dhaar taj bikaar man ga-yand siree guroo siree guroo siree guroo sat jee-o. ||5||10||
Enshrine this most excellent Name within your heart, and renounce the wickedness of the mind, O Gayand. the Supreme Guru, the Supreme Guru, the Supreme Guru, the True, Dear Lord. ||5||10||

The great Guru, the great Guru, the great Guru is true, dear One.

Trust the Guru's word. It is your own treasure. Know this teaching is true. Day and night it brings you good, and you reach the highest place.

Let go of craving, anger, greed and clinging. Stop tricking people. Cut the noose of ego, and love being in the Sangat.

The body, the home, love for your wife, the mind's pleasures: this world is all of these. Free your mind of them. Serve the Guru's lotus feet always, and plant this teaching firmly in you.

Gayand says: O mind, hold this most precious Naam in your heart and let go of what is wicked. The great Guru, the great Guru, the great Guru is true, dear One.

The deeper layer

The Guru's word is your own treasure. Trust it, and day and night it brings you good.

Nij niDhaan means your own treasure. Ha-umai kaa fanDh kaat means cut the noose of ego, haumai, the feeling of being a separate self that has to come first. The bard asks you to love being in the saadhsang, the Sangat — people gathered together to remember the One.

Body, home, family and pleasure make up this world, and the bard asks the mind to be free of being caught in them. The bard is Gayand, who signs his name in the last line.
