Verse 1 of 4

Savaiye in Praise of Guru Ram Das (Bhatt Keerat), Verse 1 — serving, the jewel of wisdom shines

jin sabad kamaa-ay param pad paa-i-o sayvaa karat na chhodi-o paas.
Living the Word of the Shabad, He attained the supreme status; while performing selfless service, He did not leave the side of Guru Amar Daas.
taa tay ga-uhar ga-yaan pargat ujee-aara-o dukh daridar anDh-yaar ko naas.
From that service, the light from the jewel of spiritual wisdom shines forth, radiant and bright; it has destroyed pain, poverty and darkness.
kav keerat jo sant charan murh laageh tinH kaam kroDh jam ko nahee taraas.
So speaks Keerat the poet: those who grasp hold of the feet of the Saints, are not afraid of death, sexual desire or anger.
jiv angad ang sang naanak gur tiv gur amardaas kai gur raamdaas. ||1||
Just as Guru Nanak was part and parcel, life and limb with Guru Angad, so is Guru Amar Daas one with Guru Raam Daas. ||1||

In plain words

He lived the Word and reached the highest place. While serving, he never left the Guru's side.

From that service, the jewel of wisdom shines out bright. It has wiped out pain, poverty and darkness.

Keerat the poet says: those who hold on to the feet of the saints have no fear of craving, anger or death.

Just as Guru Angad was one with Guru Nanak, limb to limb, so Guru Ram Das is one with Guru Amar Das.

Greatness stays humble and keeps serving.
The deeper layer

Serving with love makes the jewel of wisdom shine.

The poet is Keerat. He says Guru Ram Das lived the shabad, the Word, and reached the highest place. Yet he never left Guru Amar Das's side. He kept serving. Sevaa means serving others with love.

Out of that service, a gauhar, a jewel of wisdom, lit up. Its light chased off pain, want, and darkness.

Keerat says those who hold on to the saints' feet stop fearing craving, anger, and jam, death.

Think of a helper who stays after class to stack chairs every day. Quietly, they become the one everyone trusts. The last line ties it together: jiv angad ang sang naanak gur — as Nanak and Angad were one, so Amar Das and Ram Das are one light in two lamps.

A Question to Sit With

Can you think of someone impressive who is also humble? What is that like?
