Salok Sehskritee, Salok 2 — Knowing the One Is the Point of a Life

nihfalaN tas-y janmas-y jaavad barahm na bindtay.
The mortal's life is fruitless, as long as he does not know God.
saagraN sansaarsa-y gur parsaadee tareh kay.
Only a few, by Guru's Grace, cross over the world-ocean.
karan kaaran samrath hai kaho naanak beechaar.
The Creator, the Cause of causes, is All-powerful. Thus speaks Nanak, after deep deliberation.
kaaran kartay vas hai jin kal rakhee Dhaar. ||2||
The Creation is under the control of the Creator. By His Power, He sustains and supports it. ||2||

In plain words

As long as a person does not know the One, their life bears no fruit.

Only a few, by the Guru's grace, cross the wide ocean of the world.

Nanak says, after thinking it through: the Creator, the Cause behind every cause, can do all things.

All of creation is in the Creator's hands. By the Creator's own power, it is held up and kept going.

The One who set everything in motion still holds it — including you.
The deeper layer

A life lived without knowing the One is like a tree that never gives fruit, and the One who made everything holds it all up.

Nihfalan tas-y janmas-y: that life is without fruit. It is a tree that has not yet borne what it was planted for. Saagran sansaarsa-y: the world is pictured as a wide ocean, and only a few cross it, gur parsaadee, by the Guru's grace.

Then Guru Nanak names the One as karan kaaran samrath, the all-powerful Cause of causes. Jin kal rakhee dhaar: by the One's own power, all of creation is held up.

A Question to Sit With

When you feel like everything depends on you, what would change if you remembered you are being held?
