Gaathaa, Salok 2 — no power saves you without the Holy One

Even if the mortal could reduce himself to the size of an atom, and shoot through the ethers, worlds and realms in the blink of an eye, O Nanak, without the Holy Saint, he shall not be saved. ||2||

Translation by Dr. Sant Singh Khalsa

In plain words

Even if I could make myself as small as a speck of dust, and fly through the skies, past every world and land, in the blink of an eye —

Nanak says: without the Holy One, no one is saved.

No amazing power can take the place of the Holy One.
The deeper layer

No amazing power can take the place of the Holy One.

Parmaano parjant aakaaseh: shrinking to the size of an atom and racing across the skies. Gachhayn nain bhaarayn: going everywhere in the blink of an eye. People in Guru Arjan's time told stories of yogis with powers like these.

Binaa saadhoo na siDh-yatai: without the saadhoo, the Holy One who shows the way, nothing is won. Even the most wonderful tricks do not bring a person to the One.

A Question to Sit With

Who are the people whose goodness quietly rubs off on you?
