Phunhay, Verse 2 — getting the heart ready for the Beloved

sant sabhaa meh bais ke keerat mai kahaaN.
Seated in the Society of the Saints, I chant the Lord's Praises.
arpee sabh seegaar ayhu jee-o sabh divaa.
I dedicate all my adornments to Him, and give all this soul to Him.
aas pi-aasee sayj so kant vichhaa-ee-ai.
With hopeful yearning for Him, I have made the bed for my Husband.
harihaaN mastak hovai bhaag ta saajan paa-ee-ai. ||2||
O Lord! If such good destiny is inscribed upon my forehead, then I shall find my Friend. ||2||

In plain words

Sitting in the gathering of the saints, I sing the praises of the One.

I offer all my finery, and I give my whole self.

Full of hope and longing, I have made the bed ready for my Husband Lord.

O Lord! If good fortune is written on my forehead, I will find my Friend.

Getting your heart ready is how you welcome what you long for.
The deeper layer

The heart gets ready for the Beloved, the way you get a home ready for someone dear.

Guru Arjan sits in sant sabhaa, the gathering of the saints, and sings the praises of the One. He offers all his seegaar, his finest things, and his whole self.

Then comes a picture from an old love song. A bride gets the bed ready for her husband, full of hope. In the Guru's verses, that bride is any soul, and the Husband is the One.

Think of cleaning your room and setting out snacks before your best friend visits. You keep looking out the window. The last line says, if it is written on my forehead, I will find my Friend. The waiting is full of hope.

A Question to Sit With

How do you get your heart ready for something you deeply hope for?
