Phunhay, Verse 14 — eyes, ears and tongue that forget the One

nain na daykheh saaDh se nain bihaali-aa.
The eyes which do not see the Holy - those eyes are miserable.
karan na sunhee naad karan mund ghaali-aa.
The ears which do not hear the Sound-current of the Naad - those ears might just as well be plugged.
rasnaa japai na naam til til kar katee-ai.
The tongue which does not chant the Naam ought to be cut out, bit by bit.
O Lord! When the mortal forgets the Lord of the Universe, the Sovereign Lord King, he grows weaker day by day. ||14||

In plain words

Eyes that do not look upon the holy are miserable eyes.

Ears that do not hear the inner music might as well be closed.

A tongue that does not speak the Naam might as well be lost, bit by bit.

O Lord! When a person forgets the Lord of the World, the King, they grow weaker day by day.

Forgetting the One, a person grows weaker day by day.
The deeper layer

Eyes, ears and tongue that never turn toward the One are wasted, and a person who forgets the One grows weaker.

The verse speaks very strongly here. It says eyes that never see the holy are sad eyes. Ears that never hear the naad, the deep inner music, might as well be closed. It says a hard thing about a tongue that never speaks the Naam too. These are big words to shake us awake. They are not about hurting the body.

Think of a phone that is on but never joins the WiFi. It has everything it needs, but it is not doing what it was made for.

The last line gives the point. When we forget gobid, the Keeper of the world, we grow a little weaker each day. When we remember, we grow stronger.

A Question to Sit With

When do your eyes, ears, and voice feel most alive?
