Translation by Dr. Sant Singh Khalsa

In plain words

Farid says: some people are very proud of their greatness, their wealth and their youth.

They go back to their Master with empty hands, like little hills of sand after the rain.

Pride in wealth and youth melts like a sandhill in the rain.
The deeper layer

Pride in money, youth and greatness melts away, the way rain flattens a hill of sand.

This salok is by Guru Arjan, written in Farid's name among Farid's own saloks. Garab, pride, in vadi-aa-ee-aa, greatness. Dhan joban: wealth and youth. Khaalee chalay: they leave empty-handed, tibay ji-o meehahu, like sand dunes after the rain.

A sandhill looks big and solid until the first heavy rain. Then it is gone. The things people boast about are like that.

A Question to Sit With

What is something you feel proud of that a rainy day could wash away?
