Savaiye Sri Mukhbak (Mehl 5), Verse 9 — A lamp lit in the dark
Translation by Dr. Sant Singh Khalsa
I am a beggar; I have come to the shelter of the One, the Giver of all givers.
Bless me with the gift of the dust of the saints' feet; holding on to it, I cross the frightening ocean of the world.
Please hear my prayer, O Master, if it pleases You.
My mind longs to see You; let this mind stay steady in loving You.
A lamp is lit in the darkness; in this dark age all are saved by the One Naam and the way of faith.
The One is shown in all the worlds. Nanak, Your servant, says: the Guru is the Supreme One.
A beggar at the Giver's door asks only to see the One, and a lamp has been lit in the dark.
Jaachak: a beggar, someone who comes with empty hands. Sant rayn: the dust of the saints' feet, a picture of deep humility. Bha-ojal: the frightening world-ocean, crossed by holding on to the saints.
Bali-o charaag anDh-yaar meh: a lamp is lit in the darkness. Kal is the dark age, and the light is ik naam, the One Naam. Jan naanak gur paarbarahm: the Guru is the Supreme One. This verse closes the first set of Savaiye.
When has a small light — a person, a kind word — helped you find your way in a dark moment?
