ਕਮਲ ਨੈਨ ਅੰਜਨ ਸਿਆਮ ਚੰਦ੍ਰ ਬਦਨ ਚਿਤ ਚਾਰ ॥
kamal nain anjan si-aam chandar badan chit chaar.
My Lord has lotus-eyes; His Face is so beautifully adorned.
ਮੂਸਨ ਮਗਨ ਮਰੰਮ ਸਿਉ ਖੰਡ ਖੰਡ ਕਰਿ ਹਾਰ ॥੧੦॥
moosan magan maramm si-o khand khand kar haar. ||10||
O Musan, I am intoxicated with His Mystery. I break the necklace of pride into bits. ||10||

In plain words

My Beloved has lotus eyes lined with dark kohl, and a lovely face like the moon.

O Musan, I am lost in this mystery; I break the necklace of pride into pieces.

In the presence of the Beloved's beauty, the necklace of pride falls away.
The deeper layer

When you see the Beloved's beauty, pride falls apart.

The verse describes the Beloved. Kamal nain: eyes like lotus flowers. Chandar badan: a face like the moon. The lover is magan, completely lost in love, caught up in the One's maramm, the mystery.

And then the haar, the necklace, is broken into bits. Here that necklace is pride. It is something we wear to look important.

Think of a kid who shows off a fancy watch. Then they see a sky full of shooting stars and forget the watch completely. Nobody made them take it off. The beauty did it.

A Question to Sit With

What beauty makes you forget to show off?
