Salok Bhagat Kabir, Salok 10 — dark deeds in the night

ਕਬੀਰ ਰਾਤੀ ਹੋਵਹਿ ਕਾਰੀਆ ਕਾਰੇ ਊਭੇ ਜੰਤ ॥
kabeer raatee hoveh kaaree-aa kaaray oobhay jant.
Kabir, the night is dark, and men go about doing their dark deeds.
ਲੈ ਫਾਹੇ ਉਠਿ ਧਾਵਤੇ ਸਿ ਜਾਨਿ ਮਾਰੇ ਭਗਵੰਤ ॥੧੦॥
lai faahay uth Dhaavtay se jaan maaray bhagvant. ||10||
They take the noose and run around; but rest assured that God shall destroy them. ||10||

In plain words

Kabir says: the nights are dark, and people go about doing dark deeds.

They pick up a rope to catch others and run off to do harm — but know this: the Lord brings them down.

Harm done in the dark cannot build anything that lasts.
The deeper layer

Harm done in the dark does not get the last word; the One brings it down.

Raatee hoveh kaaree-aa: the nights are dark. Kaaray oobhay jant: people rise up to do dark deeds. They take a faahay, a rope or snare, and run out to harm others. Se jaan maaray bhagvant: know that the Lord strikes them down. Cruelty done in secret has nothing to stand on.

If someone is being unkind to you or hurting you, that is never something you have to accept. Telling a grown-up you trust is always the right thing to do.

A Question to Sit With

Why do you think things built on hurting others tend to fall apart?
