Salok Bhagat Kabir, Salok 19 — whoever churns, eats

ਕਬੀਰ ਮਾਇਆ ਡੋਲਨੀ ਪਵਨੁ ਵਹੈ ਹਿਵ ਧਾਰ ॥
kabeer maa-i-aa dolnee pavan vahai hiv Dhaar.
Kabir, Maya is the butter-churn; the breath flows like ice water.
ਜਿਨਿ ਬਿਲੋਇਆ ਤਿਨਿ ਖਾਇਆ ਅਵਰ ਬਿਲੋਵਨਹਾਰ ॥੧੯॥
jin bilo-i-aa tin khaa-i-aa avar bilovanhaar. ||19||
Whoever does the churning eats the butter; the others are just churning-sticks. ||19||

In plain words

Kabir says: Maya, the world, is the butter churn, and the breath flows through it like ice-cold water.

Whoever has done the churning has eaten the butter; the others are only churning sticks.

You get the butter by doing the churning yourself.
The deeper layer

The butter goes to the one who does the churning.

Again Maya is the dolnee, the churn. The breath flows hiv Dhaar, like a stream of icy water, cool and steady. Jin bilo-i-aa tin khaa-i-aa: whoever churned, ate. The others are only bilovanhaar, sticks going back and forth with nothing to show for it. The good of life comes to the one who takes part with the whole heart.

A Question to Sit With

What is something you can only get by doing, not by watching?
