Salok Vaaraan Te Vadheek (Mehl 4), Salok 117 — when love points the wrong way
Translation by Dr. Sant Singh Khalsa
One who follows only their own mind may do service, but their heart is stuck on loving something other than the One.
Through Maya, the pull of the world, their clinging to children, spouse and family keeps growing.
At the Court they are asked for an account, and in the end no one can set them free.
Without the Naam, everything is pain; clinging to Maya brings sorrow.
Nanak says: when the One comes into view for one who faces the Guru, all clinging to Maya falls away.
Service done with a heart stuck on the world turns to sorrow; seeing the One through the Guru lets the clinging go.
Manmukh is the one who follows only their own mind, the opposite of the gurmukh, who faces the Guru. Doojai bhaa-ay is loving something other than the One; maa-i-aa moh is clinging to the passing world, here even to one's own family. Dargahi laykhaa mangee-ai: an account is asked at the Court, and no one can stand in for us at the end.
The last line turns: gurmukh nadree aa-i-aa, when the One comes into view, moh maa-i-aa vichhurh sabh jaa-ay, all the clinging falls away.
When has wanting more of something left you feeling emptier, not fuller?
