Salok Vaaraan Te Vadheek (Mehl 5), Salok 149 — chasing more and missing everything

ਮਾਇਆ ਮਨਹੁ ਨ ਵੀਸਰੈ ਮਾਂਗੈ ਦੰਮਾਂ ਦੰਮ ॥
maa-i-aa manhu na veesrai maaNgai dammaaN damm.
In his mind, the mortal does not forget Maya; he begs for more and more wealth.
ਸੋ ਪ੍ਰਭੁ ਚਿਤਿ ਨ ਆਵਈ ਨਾਨਕ ਨਹੀ ਕਰੰਮਿ ॥੧੯॥
so parabh chit na aavee naanak nahee karamm. ||19||
That God does not even come into his consciousness; O Nanak, it is not in his karma. ||19||

Translation by Dr. Sant Singh Khalsa

In plain words

Maya does not leave the mind; a person begs for more and more money.

Nanak says: that One does not even come to mind; it is not in this person's karma.

*A heart too full of wanting-more leaves no room for what matters most.*
The deeper layer

A mind full of wanting more money has no room left for the One.

Maa-i-aa manhu na veesrai: Maya, the pull of the world, never leaves the mind. Maangai dammaa damm: begging for coin after coin. So prabh chit na aavee: that One does not come to mind. Nahee karamm: it is not in the person's karma. In Gurbani the word karam often also means grace.

A Question to Sit With

What could you make more room for if you chased “more stuff” a little less?
