Salok Vaaraan Te Vadheek (Mehl 1), Salok 19 — The One Lives in Every Heart

God the Cosmic Husband dwells within all hearts; without Him, there is no heart at all.
naanak tay sohaaganee jinHaa gurmukh pargat ho-ay. ||19||
O Nanak, the Gurmukhs are the happy, virtuous soul-brides; the Lord is revealed to them. ||19||

Translation by Dr. Sant Singh Khalsa

In plain words

The Beloved Husband lives in every heart; without the Beloved, there is no heart at all.

Nanak says: the happy brides are the ones who turn to the Guru, and to them the Beloved is revealed.

The One lives in every heart, and turning to the Guru makes that presence plain.
The deeper layer

The One lives in every heart, and the Guru shows it.

Sabhnee ghatee saho vasai: the Husband, the One, lives in every heart. Sah bin ghat na ko-ay: without the One there is no heart at all.

The sohaaganee, the happy brides, are those to whom the One becomes pargat, plain to see, through the Guru. The One was there all along.

A Question to Sit With

If the same One lives in every heart, does that change how you might look at someone you find hard to like?
